Hey all!
I bought a 2001 TRD Supercharged Toyota 4Runner 2WD for $4700. It has vibration when cruising at 70mph+. I’ve replaced shocks/struts/springs front and rear, steering rack bushings, inner and outer tie rods, lower ball joints, front brakes, bought all new tires and had them balanced & rebalanced. The vehicle has a slight steering wheel shake at highway speed, and I’ve been trying to track down a vibration that feels like driveshaft vibration, but there’s no play in the driveshaft from the U-joints. Is it possible it could still be the driveshaft or should I start looking at things like wheel bearings/axle seals? I’m pretty familiar with these vehicles as this is the 3rd 4Runner I’ve driven/owned and neither of the other two had this issue.
when I bought the vehicle I noticed it was fuel pinging, and since I noticed that I put colder spark plugs in it and that was a good remedy for the pinging, but is it also a possibility it could be transmission related? I’m open to ideas on what it could be but I’m a college student on a college budget so I do all my work on all my vehicles myself. What else should I check and what else could it be? I plan on yanking the rear drums off to check the brake cylinders and axle seals/wheel bearings here in the next week or so. Any and all advice/help is welcomed! 😎
Try rotating the tires front to back. It sounds like you could have a bent wheel. Check the front wheel bearings or hub assembly. A shake in the steering wheel should be coming from the frontend usually a driveshaft vibration would be in the seat on a 2 wheel drive.
@bigrod
I will get it all rebalanced. I’m a student at a technical college and everyone is stumped at what’s going on with this vehicle. Should I pull wheels off a similar 4Runner that doesn’t have this problem and see if the wheels could be the issue? We plan on getting new wheels.
The vibration at 70mph is definitely felt in the floor and seat. Thanks
Sorry so long getting back. I did once have a bad ujoint that didn't show any slack when shaking or trying to move the drive shaft. All the bearings had rusted to powder. But I was getting a clanging sound when it was put in gear.
Pinpoint the vibration by tracking the noise. Scotty has videos on that.
