Are Jaguar, Land Rover, BMW (including Mini), Mercedes-Benz and the Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen, Audi, etc.) the worst car manufacturers ever in the automotive world? It seems that every vehicle that they have made, they all end up becoming an endless money pit in the end not even reaching 100,000 miles (with the exception of a few).
I would disagree.
The worst car brands, IMO, would be:
1. Hyundai/Kia
2. Land Rover
3. Jaguar
4. Stellantis
5. GM/Ford
Definitely agree with your #1 based on my recent experience with them.
I think your list of makes to avoid needs to expand to 10
Worst currently? Certainly the ones you name are up there, but there are others at least as bad. (Like GM, "Stellantis", Hyundai/Kia.) It's quicker and easier to list the decent ones than all the bad ones out there at this point.
Worst ever? There's some stiff competition for that one, many of which are defunct. Have you ever dealt with British Leyland products?
Here is my updated list including a defunct one.
- Jaguar and Land Rover
- BMW and Mini
- Mercedes-Benz
- Volkswagen, Audi, etc.
- Volvo
- Hyundai, Kia and Genesis
- Nissan and Infiniti
- Mitsubishi
- Suzuki
- Saab
don't buy Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge/Fiat either
My own experience of nearly 40 years negates your #10. :silly:
My family drives Chrysler products (before fiat takeover) and we haven't had any major issues like engine rebuild or transmission replacement
Chrysler has had its ups and downs over the decades but the Fiat takeover ended any hope of them ever producing a quality product again. It's unlikely the Stellantis deal will change anything for the better.
it wasn't a take-over. It was a merger, and in my experience Chrysler was junk when they declared bankruptcy in 2009.
Saab got passed around like the toy nobody wanted, until it ran out of money. It is now defunct so we don't have to worry about them any more.
Fiat-Chrysler, a merger like Hudson "merging" with Nash, or even Chrysler's earlier "merger of equals" with Mercedes Benz. I think we know who's calling the tune over there. In any event, there are some slant-sixes that have been running around for decades and hundreds of thousands of miles that might take issue with the idea that Chrysler products have always been junk.
I still deal with Saab because I have 3 of them, all decades old and still running fine. The biggest problem the company had was it never quite figured out how to make money. People can badmouth them as much as they like, but having owned several since the early 1980s tells me a different story.
I didn't say always. I'm talking about leading up to the bankruptcy.
I'm sure Chrysler have some good cars from back when my parents were young, but we're talking about contemporary cars here right.
True, the investors who put up the money are calling the shots now. But Chrysler had to be rescued because they were insolvent, so it was more of a fire sale.
Being an old guy I mainly remember Chrysler being an engineering powerhouse back in the day. Some of the strongest and most durable engines and automatic transmissions in the business at the time. (I haven't dealt with any Chrysler products built in this century.)
my dad says the same. It's too bad. USA once was an automobile power house.
dude Lada's are indestructible. I watch the experiments that Garage 54 puts them through, and they just won't die.
You’re right, I seem to have misunderstood the question. I’ll edit my post.
They could be bad. I actually don't know a great deal about them. I'll ask my dad since he experienced the soviet union.
My personal definition for endless money pit distinguishes between the following:
A) Endless money pit mainly because the damn car always breaks down:
B) Endless money pit mainly because, although the car is relatively reliable, the cost of maintenance is significantly higher because of parts and labor, compared to other reliable cars: BMW (including Mini), Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen, Audi, etc.)
I'd put Jaguar, Land Rover in the former, and BMW (including Mini), Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen, Audi, etc.) in the latter. Not sure where I'd put MB.
Anything English is the worst.
