91 Octane required on my 2022 Tucson?

Hi Scotty,

I just bought a 2022 Hyundai Tucson SEL with 2.5L 2497CC l4 GAS DOHC Naturally Aspirated engine.

Hyundai dealers are advertising this vehicle as using regular gasoline. Nowhere is there a sticker or indication on the car to use premium.  The only place is in the manual which I read AFTER I purchased it,  and this statement in the manual goes beyond the more typical "premium gasoline is recommended", as it implies premium gasoline 91 or higher is REQUIRED. I called the dealer who told me premium was recommended only, not required, and they filled the vehicle with regular 87 the day I purchased it. But like you tell me, READ THE MANUAL and go by that. At least to cover your butt from a warranty denial!

I contacted Hyundai who could not answer anything beyond the manual and referred me to call a Hyundai Service Center... 🤣 🤡 🤡 🤡 lol!   I talked to a service center clown and he told me as long as the check engine light doesn’t come on or you feel vibrating or knocking, you “should” be fine.  Ya, that's the answer I get.  Of course the service dept. Wants to see me come in with engine issues! Lol

So my question is, do you really think running 87 will harm my engine?  I know the manual says 91 and my warranty could be voided if they know I run 87 but….aside from that? Really?

Much thanks Scotty, I watch you everyday and appreciate your knowledge!  You're a fun guy!

Kevie.

I just purchased the exact same car & came across the same situation. What has happened since almost a year you owning it? What octane did you use? The gov site has Regular gas to be used. So the information is conflicting. Look at the link.

My condolences for buying a Hyundai.  If the dealer's lips are moving, they are lying.

He also got the 1st/2nd model year of a new engine design.
And from what I'm already seeing, it's not a good engine, oil consumption even on new engines, cat chunks fall apart and get sucked into the cylinders (typical Hyundai issue - the cat's too close to the engine, I guess it's makes it get higher cat temp for emissions), and it has hydraulic tappets which is a cause for concern on Hyundai engines especially with the longer intervals they recommend. Hyundai rates it at 150k miles but I guess we'll see about that.

Do you have any pictures of the manual or where you found out? I am sure it has to use regular gasoline being an NA 4 cylinder. Even if premium is recommended u can still get away with regular and it won't harm ur engine.

Use what your owner’s manual requires.  Hyundai engines (and dealer/warranty service) are already questionable, so I would follow not deviate from what they require.  Also, see below:  if you go to lower octane and get knocking, then you know you need to stick to the higher octane gas.

"premium gasoline is recommended", as it implies premium gasoline 91 or higher is REQUIRED.

How does that imply that? It just doesn't.

Most cars recommend premium, If it doesn't say required it ain't required.

OP mentioned in his opening post that his owner’s manual requires 91 octane. He said it goes beyond the usual statement “premium gasoline is recommended”.
