Scotty, I got a 97 Dakota 175k miles with the 318 magnum engine and an automatic transmission ( RE44 I think ). I paid sixteen hundred bucks for it I thing I got a good deal. From all I can tell it only needs a thermostat and a oil pump. Is there anything else I should look at in these old trucks and Should I preemptively get a factory rebuild transmission for it.

If the transmission is shifting OK there's no reason to replace it. If you don't know how long it's been since the trans was serviced you might want to have a look at the site FAQ section on changing transmission fluid to see if that should be done.
