which repair to go for?

I have a 2005 BMW E85, electronic power steering failed as it does, it's intermittent and works flawlessly when it is on without any rough spots, I have it disabled currently so it doesn't suddenly switch on me as I'm driving

to repair it I've been quoted £750 by one garage who claim they can fix it with just new sensors along with a new ECU so they can code it in, they say they can't connect to the current ECU

or closer to £1.5K for a whole steering column replacement including all sensors and the motors, by a BMW dealership

but the dealership haven't seen the car and I'll fear they also want to change the ECU

which of these options would be better? I'm not entirely sure

I think I trust that £750 quote more, but a whole new column might last longer

ive sunk £6K into repairing this car so it's sunken cost fallacy at this point lol

Welcome new member. I’m sorry to be cynical, but I think the answer is “neither”.  All you’ll be doing is buying an even more expensive repair 6 months from now. It’s Scotty’s proverbial “endless money pit”.

Not really helpful, it's my only car...But fyi: Acts 2:38 Acts 22:16
Mark 16:16
Revelation 1:5 Hebrews 9:17* Gospel

Yeah. I hesitated to post it for just that reason. I completely understand your perspective. But it really is a choice between a bad option and a badder option. Cars are sometimes like that. Best.
