Hey Scotty,
my 1997 Toyota Tacoma Automatic V6 4x4 with around 160,000 miles has an gasoline type smell to it when I am standing near the exhaust. I also notice it gets pretty strong whenever I am fueling up and am either downwind or standing near the nozzle that leads to the tank. As much as I love inhaling fumes as much as the next guy (not a fan), I bet with your advice, I could at least improve my fuel economy and maybe clean up this rich smelling exhaust. No check engine lights at the moment, where could this be coming from? Is it burning too rich? How would you go about fixing/improving the problem? Would a clogged charcoal canister be the culprit? Maybe back sparkplugs?
Thanks to all who share their advice, lord knows I am gonna need it.
Chances are it's a problem in your 27-year-old evap system. Check for leaks, and do a diagnostic scan for codes and live data.
