Able to plow?

Hey lads, I currently have a 04 Silverado 2500HD LS that I have rigged up to plow. I believe the plow is roughly 7.5ft, I haven't measured it. My concern is that she is getting up there in miles (296XXX) and of course nothing lasts forever.

So my question revoles around the next truck to rig my plow to and I was considering the more modern Tundra. Are they capable of pick up and plowing at somewhat the same capacity as a 2500 truck? I'm not sure where they fall on the weight scale cause alot of people compare the F150 and the Tundra.

However, most articles I read say you shouldn't plow with anything less than a F250/2500 but then recommend the Tundra as a great truck for the job.

Is the Tundra more "heavy duty" oriented or is it simply a step up from the Tacoma?

For that kind of work, I would still go for the 3/4 ton and over Ford or Chevy trucks.

Thank you for your response! Now I've really only done super light duty work with it. Plow the front of my driveway/neighbors driveway. I was thinking of maybe doing a little bit of side work during the winters but it hasn't snowed bad here in a very long time (NJ).

You'd still say a Tundra still isn't up to the task?

Just asking cause I would like to get a newer truck and as far as I can tell, the Tundra can't be beat in reliability. So if i were to get say, another Silverado, I would try to stay in that same year range of like 98-06 since I heard those were GM's best years for the Silverado.

3/4 ton will hold up better with typical maintenance intervals. 1/2 ton, you’d be changing fluids and front end parts more often than you would want to. I don’t know if you’re buying new or going the used route. Honestly I’d just rebuild or replace the motor and transmission in the truck you have now unless the frame and truck itself is about to fall apart. Replacing transmission and motor will still be cheaper than buying a new or used truck in current market.

I see I see, yes unfortunately the fame on my current truck isn't in the best of shape or else I would replace the tranny/engine without hesitation.

Any suggestions for what the ideal 3/4 would be in today market? I plan on buying used since new trucks are insanely expensive.

3/4s a different game than the 1/2 tons. In my opinion Ford takes the gas 3/4 ton market. I would look at a good used 6.2 w/ 6 speed transmission OR, and I know new is crazy but it’s another option, XL trim 7.3 gas. @tpicht37

I wouldn't buy any GM after they instituted AFM.

The GM heavy duty trucks (2500HD and up) with the gasoline engines don’t have cylinder deactivation, thankfully.  It’s on the 1500 series that they have the dreaded cylinder deactivation.

I meant the ones that have AFM, those are the ones I wouldn't buy.

I can't disagree with the above, but the dealership where I bought my Venza has an 02 Tundra they use for running errands daily as well as plowing snow in the winter. They said it worked great, but we also don't get much snow here. 😉
