You probably have a leak somewhere. Given that you're in a 23 year old truck, I'm willing to bet there's a few holes in your condenser. My 1999 Ranger had holes in it.

Now, don't guess. Get a set of manifold gauges at the auto parts store and connect them to the high side and low side to see if there is anything in the system. If there is not (it will read 0 PSI) then add some refrigerant with leak dye in it.

The A/C system must be on while you are adding refrigerant. If the compressor and its pressure switches are working correctly, you should hear a clicking sound from.the serpentine line when you add refrigerant through the manifold gauge.

If there are any holes in the system, the leak dye will make them visible. Also watch for condensation drips underneath the truck in unusual places. Refrigerant chills the air when it escapes into the atmosphere and drops humidity as moisture. Post pictures of where you find the dye and someone can tell you what it is that's bad. You will need to replace more than the one thing to do it correctly.

Providing the problem isn't your evaporator in the dashboard, if you're good with technical stuff, you may be able to fix it yourself. I got my Ranger's going with a little research.
