I have a 2019 Kia Sedona with 82,000 miles. Last August the AC was acting odd. It would actually blow less cool air when on recirc then when not. It would make a whooshing noise (perhaps from the recirc door switches position). The lights in the AC and Recirc buttons would blink. Dealer said it needed refrigerant. Said it was 1050 grams low. They replaced refrigerant, included dye, found no leaks and sent me on my merry way. Now 8 months later, it’s acting up again. There was a bad odor. I purchased an AC cleaner that I shoved it’s hose up the AC evaporator drain hose and sprayed the foam into it. That worked pretty well for a bit. Now the smell is back and the AC is acting up again. It’s not blowing very cold. The lights intermittently blink again. When I first start the vehicle, if I turn the fan on full blast, the AC and recirc shut off, but if I turn the fan down a notch, they turn back on and I get cold air. Once I start driving, then I can turn the fan on full blast. Because the dealer installed dye, I got the UV light out. Only place I am seeing some dye is around the low pressure valve (on the low pressure line, the firewall under it). It’s dry so hard to tell if it’s old from when they installed the dye or if it’s leaking from the valve. When I removed the cap from the low pressure valve, I got a little pssssst sound, so it seams the valve is not fully sealed. 1/2 hour later (with no running the engine in between) I removed the cap and got the psssst again. The low pressure valve had a lot of the dye in it, but again, I am not sure if it’s from the original install. I want to take the van back to the dealer, but I don’t trust them. As you read above, they said my system was down 1050 grams. That’s all my system holds (+/- 25 grams). So how was I getting cold air? And there were other things they told me need to be repaired when they did not. I.e. they told me my brake pads need to be replaced (there was over .25 inch of pad remaining), etc. I went to a different dealer for some service and they were even worse, giving me a list of items with a red exclamation point (including brake pads) that needed to be repaired. Things like cabin air filter, wheel alignment-all things I had already done a few weeks earlier.
Knowing that I don’t trust the dealer, but also not wanting to pay someone else to fix my AC while it’s still under the dealers repair warranty, how should I approach this? Go to the service manager, who may be the one putting the pressure on the team to sell? I get emails and calls from them every week reminding me to bring my car in for service. Go to the GM? Owner? Want the dealer to look at it, fix it and if the issue is their workmanship, pay for it. But how can I trust that they won’t make up some excuse to justify it not being warranty once they have my van back in their bay?
thank you for the help
