Tacoma Acceleration Lag

Hi Scotty! I recently purchased a 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road and love it, but I have noticed that it seems to have a bit of a power lag when accelerating.  Looking online, it seems like several people suggest purchasing an electronic throttle controller or flashing the ECM.  What would you suggest to improve the acceleration in these trucks?

Failing catalytic convertor is a possibility...they plug slowly from poor air/fuel ratios.
