Accidentally Shifted Corolla Cross Hybrid into Park While Driving - Should I Be Concerned?

Hi,

I was driving downhill in my Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and intended to shift into 'B' mode for engine braking. However, I wasn't paying close attention and accidentally shifted into Park instead. I heard some clicking noises but immediately shifted back into Drive. The car appears to be functioning normally since the incident and the Park mode seems to be working properly as well. I'm concerned about potential damage and wondering if I should have the car thoroughly checked for any issues that may not be immediately apparent.

Thank you so much.

Well, if it's working fine now, you didn't damage things. They generally have a safety device that does not allow it to actually get into park when you do that l

The parking pawl will only engage when the vehicle is going very slowly. Too fast at the spring loaded parking pawl just skips across the top of the teeth, which is probably the clicking you heard. It's not great for it. Might have caused a tiny bit of rounding. But it's not the end of the transmission. Everything is hardened steel. If Park still works on steep inclines then you're fine.

I would say that for the most part, the 'P' park position is still cable actuated on most conventional automatics.
It's probably a safety thing. It would really suck if you lost power and had to come to a stop on a hill.

Years ago you might have sheared a pin off.  These days most actions are requests to the computer and many keep you from doing bad things like trying to start it when it's already running.  Or throwing it into reverse while going forward

Power to the head lights no longer goes through the headlight switch, it "tells" the computer which uses a relay to turn on the lights

Drove a Mercedes Sprinter and you just briefly flipped the key to start it.  It would automatically keep cranking until it started without you holding the key in start.
