Antifreeze consumption

Hi Scotty,

We have a 2011 BMW 328ix wagon, auto tranny, and awd.

Recently, I had to add over two litres (0.52 gallons) of anifreeze - twice! None is dribbling out that I can see, so I imagine it's burning

in the engine.

The car has 192,000 kilometers (roughly 119,000 miles), and has been relatively trouble free so far.

It comes with the 3 litre, N54  engine I think, which is supposed to be a reliable BMW engine unlike newer versions.

What are we looking at? Worn out valve train, leaky head gasket, worn out piston rings or...?

What test should i get my mechanic to do to determine the cause?

Fix it or drive it into the St. Lawrence River and leave it there?

Thank you for your answer.

Rickey in Montreal, Quebec.

Worn out valve train

No, what would that have to do with a coolant loss?

leaky head gasket

Possibly.

worn out piston rings

Huh?

or...?

A leak in the cooling system.

If your mechanic is any good he should know what to do. I would check for cooling system leaks using UV dye and/or a pressure test, and if no leaks are found test for a head gasket leak.

Depends what's wrong with it.

You've gone through a gallon of fluid.. there's only 2 ways it gets out, leaking or burning. Test the head gasket.
