Hey Scotty! I recently purchased a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4. I looked at the door sticker and it says its made in Mexico. Is this bad? Thanks.

Some of the Mexico ones are perfectly fine. He reviewed one in a video that was holding up well.

I like the Tacoma myself, but the Tundra fits me  better.

Keep in mind, too, that quality/reliability/durability has to be designed/engineered in from the beginning long before the vehicle is assembled, which Toyota is generally good at doing (at least compared to the competition today).  And they have quality control steps and processes that have to be carefully followed at the factory.

I personally prefer the ones made in San Antonio but they're not bad bad.I did a video a few months ago about a guy who had one made in Mexico that was 7 years old and had 150,000 still work fine

@scottykilmer
Thanks for the answer!

The new ones look good and all, but I didn't like the riding quality. It was bumpy and the acceleration was crappy with the rear wheel drive and the cab felt a little cramped. The build quality is better than the earlier models of the 3rd gen (2016-2019) had many problems with all sorts of stuff like the rear end breaking, but 2021 is better I think. The toyota tacoma 3rd gen is better than all of it's competitors in terms of reliability, but not as good as the 1st and 2nd gen taco used to be...

Get a used 2015, the previous generation, they are bullet proof

The ones manufactured in Mexico do not have specific issues. Toyota seems to manage the quality control there too.

As you have said, Toyota is moving its ENTIRE Tacoma production to Mexico, and it may not be the ideal production location. Tacomas have been produced in Mexico for a few years now and it seems their hasn't been an uptick in problems with the vehicles. Could it be Toyota has a handle on this?

according to this article, they've been made there since 2004

When you look at the carcomplaints.com charts for the Tacoma, there is definitely a BIG rise in complaints after 2004.

With the exception of a specific problem encountered by many owners, as with the 2017 model, isn't it the case that there are many more Tacomas being sold on a yearly basis since 2004? That would surely account for more complaints, unless the graph represents percentages of owners with complaints.

I whipped up a chart. It looks like the correlation is not strong.

also I'm not sure if the carcomplaints values are the number of different issues, or the number of people complaining about the same issue

"Overall the worst problem category is Toyota Tacoma body / paint problems.

Although the 2016 Toyota Tacoma has the most overall complaints, we rate the 2017 model year as worse because of other possible factors such as higher repair cost or more problems at lower mileage. The most-reported problem is with the 2017 Toyota Tacoma for not shifting properly."

Well, the good news, at least, is that from 2018 onward the level of complaints is in the pre-2004 range. Also, I still can't imagine the "complaints" not being skewed in terms of percentage of owners, as it would be counter-intuitive to think there wouldn't be more complaints with more ownership, which is true of just about anything.

2018 models haven't been around long enough. As you see from the chart, ownership doesn't change THAT much

Yes, they're bad. Well, not just bad, but bad-bad.

In 2020, Tacoma got a facelift, and luxuries such as power seats came into being.

But for some time industry observers have been reporting that workmanship, quality, and even plant cleanliness in the Baja California assembly plant was so bad no tours were given and cameras are absolutely forbidden. Worker misconduct is such a problem that entire assembly operations have been not performed, and random drug searches are regularly performed and arrests made within and outside the plant. And reports of workers intentionally damaging production materials and vehicles persist.

And things are getting a lot worse for the Tacoma.

In a press release dated January 16, 2020, Tacoma will no longer being assembled in San Antonio, Texas OR in the Baja California plant.

All Tacoma assembly will be done in a new plant in Apaseo el Grande, Guanajuato, Mexico, with many of the components being sourced from Toyota suppliers in Mexico's Bajio region.

Industry observers suggest that, because the new assembly plant will get a lot of scrutiny to begin with, production quality may actually increase slightly for a period of time. So if you're concerned about things like the well-publicized incident about a skip plate falling-off in a test drive, cheer-up.

But the same observers say that it's just a matter of time before the new plant will have the same issues and the old Baja plant.

Now, I just wonder if production in Mexico will make Tacoma the new Ford Pinto, or maybe even a PT Cruiser. Maybe Toyota is killing the Tacoma intentionally ?

But for the immediate future, watch and see if the sales numbers surge for the Colorado/Canyon, and maybe even the Frontier ?

Hey Scotty, I see you love Toyotas a lot. What do you think of the Toyota Tacoma? Does the fact that they're made in Mexico affect their build quality?

Hi everyone - do the Tacomas that are made in Mexico have any known issues? I know some manufacturers have quality issues with vehicles made in Mexico, but wondering if Toyota had any problems. Looking at Tacoma's since it seems prices on the 4Runners aren't coming down anytime soon.

Thanks

See below:   They have also been making that generation of trucks since 2016 and with so many sold, you would hope the kinks would have been ironed out by now.

Thanks! I actually ended up buying a 2016 Tacoma TRD Off-Road. Learned from Scotty and you guys and I think I was able to make a good purchase. Everything has been fine so far. Thanks for all the tips!
