Welcome new member!  Auctions (not including classic car auctions) are generally disposing of undesirable cars that are not ready for the end user.  Cars that are reliably run and drive and are in good condition can be sold at a higher price without auction.

Auction cars are usually cheap, but you have to assume that they will need a lot of work. Some of them have problems that are not fixable at all.  So here is the bottom line... don't buy an auction car unless:

  1. You have the shop and tools to fix what needs fixing
  2. You are ready to take a loss

In other words, auctions are for flippers who are buying and selling multiple cars, not for a regular driver that is looking for a deal.  If you want a car for yourself to drive, you are better off going through private sellers.

Best,

As others have said that's a big NO. This has been discussed to death here and Scotty has talked about it in his videos as well.

Both choices you stated suck.  Without many years of experience at car auctions, buying there is like handing ammunition to the guy holding a gun to your head.  Buying used from a dealer is like walking into a spinning propeller.
