My brother and I are trying to install a new CV axel on the driver side of our 1998 Camry but we’ve been having a really hard time putting the new one into the differential. Does anyone know what I could do to get it in there, I’ve already tried grease and that didn’t work so is there something we’re doing wrong.

Yes i would say you are in trouble to the point that you now may need to replace the transmission , you should never ever hammer or force a Constant Velocity Joint into the housing , the splines line up and they slide right in, by forcing it in the wrong way you have severely damaged the internal splines in the transmission. Sorry to say not much you can do at this point but buy a whole new transmission, or have that one repaired if its reparable.

Just line up the splines and it should go in, unless you have the wrong part.

Am I supposed to just be able to push it in or do I have to hammer it in

You should NOT need a hammer to install it. You may need to gently tap it in with a rubber mallet but that's all.

Yeah I’m definitely in trouble then I kinda already hammered it in and it’s having a hard time getting out I’m screwed and idea what I should do

It has to come out somehow. Could you attache a come along to something and pull it out? I hope you didn't damage the connection fitting in the trans axle.

I hope so as well

To answer your original question - Yes, you're screwed.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I say, get a bigger hammer. Just be sure you have the nut on the threads so you don't "bugger" them up when you hit the end of the axle.

You're just trying to get that clip to snap back in and you have to already have the axle splines lined up right for the clip to even be an issue.

Looks like Scotty uses a 5 pounder

You may have already damaged the female splines by trying to install the previous wrong parts.
