Hey Scotty, My 2012 CR-Z is due for an oil change. But this time, I get a Service B1235 code. How much is really necessary of the long list of things the dealer is going to want to charge me for?

60,000 MILE SERVICE OR SYMBOL ‘A1235’ OR ‘B1235’
Recommended Mileage Intervals: 60k/120k/180k

Perform Safety inspection including:

  • Replace engine oil and oil filter
  • Inspect vital engine compartment fluid levels
  • Check and adjust tire pressures
  • Perform battery service
  • Lubricate all locks, doors, hinges and seals
  • Clean and adjust rear brakes
  • Rotate tires
  • Clean and adjust rear brakes (drums only)
  • Replace cabin air filter element
  • Replace engine air filter element
  • Replace wiper blades
  • Exchange automatic or manual transmission fluid
  • Under vehicle inspection
  • Tire condition inspection
  • Brake pad condition inspection
  • Exchange engine coolant

Clarification: What is the mileage on your vehicle?

The mileage is a little over 90k. I get regular oil changes at the dealer

Definitely the transmission fluid (if you get to the 60k miles). Engine oil depends on how many miles have you drive since the last oil change. About the coolant, check the owner’s manual to find out the intervals. The rest of the list is just an inspection.

You can do a lot of them yourself.  The easies ones on that list that just about anyone can do themselves:

  • Inspect vital engine compartment fluid levels
  • Check and adjust tire pressures
  • Lubricate all locks, doors, hinges and seals
  • Replace cabin air filter element
  • Replace engine air filter element
  • Replace wiper blades
  • Tire condition inspection
  • Perform battery service (is this just replacing the battery?  If so, be sure to also use a memory saver.)
  • Under vehicle inspection

With a little bit more effort, you can do these as well:

  • Rotate tires (need Jack stands and hydraulic Jack)
  • Brake pad condition inspection (you can inspect while rotating the tires)

The rest is more effort and do not attempt unless you are mechanically inclined and are comfortable doing them.
