Bearing woes at a bad time....

Hello,

I have a 2013 Subaru Outback and it sounds like a rear hub bearing is making a hum at speed. It is most noticable at around 50 mph. I have jacked it up and done the "Clunka clunka" test like Scotty says, but there is no movement or Clunka clunka. I do hear a ticking noise in the bearing when I spin it by hand, which I've heard in bad bearings before. My question is....How long can I drive it like this? Is it going to go south all the sudden, or will it gradually get worse? I have a lot going on with another vehicle right now, and it will be a while before I can tear it down without worrying about not having a car to drive. Thanks

Even if now is not a good time I'd replace that ASAP. You'll have a much bigger problem to deal with if that bearing seizes up.

I’d listen to Chuck.

In a $$$ emergency, if it’s just started to whine, you can maybe stretch it out to 3000 miles (max I've tried) without any adverse effects on tyres/rest of the vehicle.

Thanks, I will get on it ASAP

No worries, remember safety above all else.
