Thoughts on Early 90’s BMW K75 motorcyles

Scotty, I'm taking the MSF course soon.  I'm really considering buying one of these older BMW K75 motorcycles from the early 90s.  What do you know about these bikes?  I really wish you'd do more motorcycle videos.

An interesting bike that is an example of a reasonably good design that was not a marketing success. The BMW traditionalist didn't know what to make of it, and it wasn't as fast as equivalent-cost Japanese bikes, so they were never big sellers. The only quirk that I know of them having is that when they were parked on the sidestand, some would let oil drain into the combustion chamber and give a puff at start-up, even though they were in good shape and not oil burners. Do conduct a compression check on ANY 30+ year old motorcycle though. Parts availability for old flat-twin BMWs is not bad, but I would imagine for K75s it might be a problem.

Nevertheless, a good example could give you many miles of smiles, and be a real conversation starter at bike gatherings.

Thanks Glen.  I can really see these going up in value in the future.  I like the idea of ABS and fuel injection (BMW was ahead of it's time back then) and low center of gravity and reliability of the flat-twin on these bikes being a newer rider.   Ideally I'd go with something like a late model Honda CB500x as first bike, but I think I can find a good example of the K75 for much less. I don't mind turning a wrench either.

Sure - let me share a good site for Classic bike info -

I'm sure there are some good K-series forums out there, if you do some Googling . If you live in the northeast, this place is great for classic parts https://www.maxbmw.com/

Hi Scotty, I salute you for your IMMENSE knowledge of cars and similar, but mostly because you are willing to share it with mere mortals.

I recently saw a video regarding the fantastic additives pending patent from your buddies.  I talk about the ATS CHEMICAL 505CRF and 505CRO. Do you think my BMW 1990 K75RT could benefit from those like a car? Do you recommend it for my bike? Thanks!

I would post this in a separate question thread to get more visibility and answers.  If you are lucky, Scotty answers questions from new thread posts.
