Brakes not working

Hey Scotty, I have a 2010 Ford Fusion SE with 148K miles on it and my brakes keep going out randomly especially when I take it out of park and into reverse or drive. For the most part it happens when the car is tilted and I have to either pull the e-brake or pump the brake a second time. A perfect example is in my driveway which is tilted upward. I’ll take my car out of park and put reverse and let go of the brake and let the car move on it’s own and when I hit the brake it sinks down and I have to pump it a second time for it to work. I have read something about it being the Hydraulic Control Unit and that it’s a 600$ piece of equipment. What do you think could be causing the problem?

Check whether you have enough brake fluid in your reservoir. Is any light in the instrument cluster on that indicates anything related to brakes?

There is a safety recall for those Ford Fusion brakes. I would look into it.

Service brakes, hydraulic

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID:
19V904000

Report Date:
December 18, 2019

Vehicles Affected:
600,166

Consequence:
If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. Owners will be notified of the safety risk with an interim letter on January 13, 2020. A second notice will be sent once parts are available, expected to be late in the first quarter of 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

Summary:
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

Tip: Recalls don’t affect every vehicle of the same year, make and model. You’ll need your car’s 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

If the fluid level is good, check the brake master cylinder.

Just tell Ford your brake pedal goes down.  Let them find our why it happens.  If you can get in on the recall that $600 cost will be zero.

But, it might be just low fluid since you park on hill and fluid being low when tilted.  Ford seems to have soft brake problems on many models.
