Hi Scotty,
LOVE Your YOUTUBE channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a 2004 Infiniti G35 6MT Coupe. 186k miles. Owned it for years. High mileage is from traveling to my son’s volleyball games. Engine problems now. Runs fine but I can smell gas on the oil dipstick. Infiniti dealership checked it out and determined ‘cylinder 3 has no compression due to piston ring failure.’’ They’re recommending a new engine assembly. What’s your opinion? Buy a new engine from Infiniti (apparently only one left) or buy a used one from…somewhere reputable? Thanks for your advice.
I think if you get a quote from the dealer, you will decide to find a good used engine from a junkyard.
It definitely made me consider other options, and the reason for this post. Thanks for your response.
Powertrain Products sells a rebuilt vqde 3.5L V6 for $4497 with a five year warranty for your car.
Thanks for the suggestion. Didn’t know of Powertrain Products prior to this post. Appreciate the information. Thanks again.
are new engines even available?
Good looking car. But at that age and miles you might be fighting a losing battle. Normally I’d say it’s time to let it go, but in this market it might be hard to find something to replace it.
If you can find a low mile junkyard motor, that is probably the way to go. Unless you want to keep it long term (to get to “classic” status), in which case let the dealer put in a new short block (sorry, engine assembly).
I would prefer a new engine over a rebuilt or used junkyard engine. I've been toying with the idea of doing a Coyote engine (5.0L) swap in my 02 Mustang GT. But I've read that the latest generation of Coyotes are GDI and there seems to be some issues with those engines stalling while being driven. So I might stay with my 4.6L.
Thanks for your response. New definitely feels better; less worry over something possibly lerking in the back just waiting to go wrong. However, the price of a new engine from Infiniti-Nissan seems astronomical. Just weighing options now. Thanks again and good luck with your Mustang.
