Buying a hearse

Topic starter

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at buying a 2005 Cadillac Hearse with 61,000 miles on it. It's coming straight from a funeral home. I've heard the Cadillac Northstar V8 is bad. I want to use this car as a daily driver. I'm paying $7,000 for it as well. Is this a bad investment? Is the Northstar V8 as bad as they say? I really like this car and would love to own it. I just need some advice from professionals.

Thanks,

Skylar

It's nicknamed the "Deathstar"

Virtually no car is an investment. A nearly two-decade old hearse with a Northstar V8 will be like having your own personal black hole to absorb vast quantities of money.

That's a far point. I currently drive a Volvo which is a money pit already.

I don't believe in ghosts or things being haunted. I just like the look of the car and functionality.

Regardless, an old Cadillac with that problematic Northstar engine and propensity for electrical gremlins and other quality issues - it’s not recommended as a daily driver.

No, but you may inadvertently attract zombies and ghosts to your vehicle especially around Halloween.

If you're going to be driving around in a fundamentally unreliable model of hearse at least get one that has real class.

[expletive deleted] I wish that was in my budget. 😂

The sentiment is appreciated - if virtually infinite funds were available I'd love one too - but please watch language, this is a family-friendly forum! Thanks.

Harold and Maude! I love that movie. And Harold's Jaguar hearse.

@chucktobias What’s parked in the garage? The roof reminds me of a Rambler but the tail lights I can’t tell, maybe a Ford?

@avalon04, the tail lights are definitely Ford, looks like an early 1960s Ford station wagon.

Dead people were carried in that hearse.  Why would you want to daily drive something that carried bodies of dead people?   What if it’s haunted?  I know Halloween is around the corner, but still.

That's exactly why I would get it, for dark humor. People always joke about how many dead bodies you can fit in the trunk, especially mobsters in those old American cars. The joke is if you have a hearse, you can fit like 10 dead bodies in the trunk... or 1 if you wanna do it with dignity 😂

what about the look on people's faces when you pull up to their house? 😆

Lol, I mean I think it's a plus to see their shocked reaction. I'm not getting this car to get a girlfriend. 😂

I know, but shock some old folks enough and you might be using the hearse for it's original purpose.

Well, there is a cheaper alternative and probably more reliable.

I've always wanted a hearse to drive around, because I have a dark sense of humor. If you want to get a hearse, I would get one that doesn't have the Northstar V8, but if you do, don't daily it. I wouldn't daily any hearse either way because they're heavy and get bad gas mileage, and not too practical since it'll most likely only seat 2, unless you're hauling stuff a lot. They do have some limo-hearse combos out there though, like the Mercedes they got for my late grandma: it had two or three back row seats and then the coffin goes in the back. This was in Taiwan though, and I think this configuration is less common in the States. Anyway that was kinda a tangent but I've also been told that it’s one of those things where kinda it becomes your personality, and especially if you live in a small town, you'll be "hearse guy". Which I don't think I would mind and if you don't then go for it but not as a daily and preferably not a Northstar. People have asked Scotty before if they should get one on live streams, a few times actually, and I forgot what he said but he also added if you have a dark sense of humor, you know... You can also recreate one of Scotty's old "BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!" outros if you want. 😂 Some people have also done hearse to RV conversions. I almost bought a 1974 Fleetwood commercial chassis with a body from Miller-Meteor for $2000, just like the one in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL73mZNv6ho

Owning a hearse as a private vehicle is something that you want to keep on the side and keep it for a long time and keep it nice and turn it into a classic, unless it's all beat up then you either restore it or mod it, or use as a Halloween prop. Out of curiosity, what model and year is your Volvo? The older ones aren't actually that bad. Maybe you'll want to keep the Volvo as your daily and drive a hearse as a weekend car.

sorry for all the random tangents lol
