Caliper Removal When Unattached to Rotor

I had to replace a ball joint, so I removed the caliper from the rotor and set it aside. It is still attached by the brake line.

When I went to reinstall the caliper to the rotor, I found that the brakes were stuck shut. (I turned on the car, thus depressing the brake and shutting them.)

Now, I can’t seem to get the brakes open to fit the rotor. And the bolts to open the caliper up are super tight, I can’t get enough leverage to make it budge since the caliper is unattached.

Any suggestions on how to remedy this?

Honda Accord 1999.

I bet a piston within caliper moved beyond its normal travel - just short of falling right out, tilted perhaps just a bit, … and now is stuck. Especially, since you applied hydraulic pressure stepping onto the pedal.

Anyway, … now, try to see if you can identify the direction of the tilt, and - very gently, try to tap the side of the piston to eliminate the tilt. It may just work, … and if it does, it will probably leak brake fluid from now on. Check it all well, …

Crack the zerk bleeder on it and see if you can press them back in.
