Hy Scotty,
I have a Camry 2012 SE, I4, 132k miles. It recently start to shudder between 40 and 50 mph at light acceleration, it only shudders for 1,2 seconds. I took it to Toyota for diagnoses and it’s the torque converter and the repair will be 2800$, they had a program to change them under warranty but the car is older than 8 years(the service bulletin expired in june) It’s a common issue that not many people know about.
I went to a shop where the mechanic is a master technician from toyota and I asked him his honest opinion of what should I do? He said basically the TC is just a pump and if I can live with the shudder or avoid it not to spend 2k plus, also he said it won’t affect the transmission or anything else. If I accelerate above 2000 rpm or harder it doesn’t shudder. If I accelerate light it always comes between 40 and 50. Also I researched a lot and on some cars even after changing the TC under warranty the issue came back, apparently there is a glitch between software and the actual TC.
What should I do just sell the car? It will really fail or can still go? Any solutions or suggestions to this annoying issue, I bought the car to keep it till 200k and up and now this...
Your mechanic is correct you can just continue to drive it that way I've had people do it for years
sounds like my issue in my "new" used 2014 Camry. it "feels" like something being dragged across the floor with a low-frequency chattering feeling (no audible sound). Much lower frequency than riding over the highway corrugated warning strips. Any suggestions? Same issue? Live with it?
2014 Camrys with 2.5 have the same issue.
