[Solved] Can (or should) I fix truck myself after an accident?

Scotty,

I have a 2003 Ford Ranger 4.0 XLT with 140K miles. I was out on a forest road a few days ago and hit a down tree on the passenger side. The steering rack has cracked, lower control arm bent + broken off from the hub assembly, and the torsion bar mounts have bent.

Submitting this to my insurance but want to know if this is something I could DIY (good mechanical ability, never needed to go to a shop before) or will I get screwed by the insurance that route? Seems like an opportunity to redo my front suspension on both sides but don't want to screw myself over and know if it's even worth it.

Your insurance is not going to pay you to fix it. In all likely hood they will total it as the damage repairs will cost more than the truck is valued at.

And if they total it, don't put any more money in it as it has no value with a salvage title.

It came right at me!

It did! It was the ghost of the other half of this tree -
