Can superchargers be reliable?

Hey there Scotty,

In the past, you've talked about how you don't like turbos due to their complexity and tendency to wear down engines. Often following that, you'll say you prefer superchargers for their greater simplicity and more immediately available power.

Though, how reliable are superchargers? Do you have an idea of what kind of mileage people usually get out of them?

I'm thinking of having guys who know what their doing put one in my 160k mi 2005 Toyota 4Runner V8. Its engine is in good condition, with a timing belt that was replaced at 120k miles, and lacking its model's common issue of exhaust manifold leaks.

You're gonna need to do some serious engine internal upgrades if you want to install a supercharger. It is NOT a plug and play modification if that's what you think it may be. You need a supported ECU tune, upgraded fuel pump, upgraded fuel injectors and fuel rail, intercooler system for the charged air, upgraded intake, and you need to modify your accessory belt setup so that it runs the supercharger's pulley. You may be able to run the supercharger on stock internals, but it WILL wear out your engine sooner than you'd like.
