I currently drive an '04 Civic Si with 345k miles.

Consumer Reports reported Honda Fit #1 three years in a row, then the Prius C for one year.

Which car currently has the lowest long-term cost of ownership?

In the past they also top-rated the Fiat 128. Consumer Reports is not an accurate source of reliability data.

I knew a guy many years ago who calculated this out and bought a Chevette diesel. Probably not many of those left. These days it would probably be a Toyota Corolla.

  1. go to our FAQ topic
  2. click on "I need to buy a car"
  3. Scroll down to Research - 3rd part links. Lots of info to read there too.

Without looking at any hard data.

I would say for a span of 10 years or less, the Prius or Corolla hybrid will be the lowest cost to maintain. Over 10 years, a Corolla will be the lowest cost to maintain.

Out of curiosity, how much do you think you have spent on maintenance so far on you Civic? How long have you had it?
