In the past they also top-rated the Fiat 128. Consumer Reports is not an accurate source of reliability data.

I knew a guy many years ago who calculated this out and bought a Chevette diesel. Probably not many of those left. These days it would probably be a Toyota Corolla.

Without looking at any hard data.
I would say for a span of 10 years or less, the Prius or Corolla hybrid will be the lowest cost to maintain. Over 10 years, a Corolla will be the lowest cost to maintain.
Out of curiosity, how much do you think you have spent on maintenance so far on you Civic? How long have you had it?
