Hey guys I have a 2003 Toyota Camry le 2.4 liter with 210k miles, Live in California. just want to know if I should replace the catalytic converter oem or after market since oem from Toyota dealership is $2,900 said it’s a special order, autozone and oreilly auto parts said they don’t have the catalytic converter for my car. It won’t match the engine family number under the cars hood. I was also told that the numbers need to match else the car won’t pass smog if anyone knows where I can buy one bit cheaper than dealership let me know thanks.

What makes you think your catalytic converter is bad? Catalytic converters are designed for the lifetime of the car. You need to do a proper analysis before just jumping to the conclusion that the catalytic converter is bad. It could be exhaust manifold leaks, oxygen sensors, vacuum leaks... 99% of the time, inefficient catalytic converters are the symptom, not the cause, and I don't believe you want to spend $2900 and come back with the same codes. Do some troubleshooting before spending that kind of money. Your wallet will thank you.

  • Well I believe California has unique laws about what catalytic converters you can use. But if companies like Walker make a legal catalytic converter for your car in California, go ahead and use that
