I'm going to replace both motor mounts in my 2000 S10 pickup. Those have to be done through the wheel well but I did have a couple questions. Number one I noticed it in the only video I can find on it they take the steering column out of the way. Is that really necessary? My second question is I'm supposed to support the engine with the jack and that's the problem but in case I lost control of the jack the engine is able to sort of rest on the crossmember in the front between the front wheels. Is that crossmember strong enough to hold the front of the engine especially when there's no strap to hold it in place from the strength of the transmission after I take the strap out because that's part of the process too?
First thing you want to put the vehicle up on jack stand so it's safe. Then do your work. Of course, the safest thing is to have a cherry picker to pick the engine assembly up from the top with a chain. Because jacking it from the bottom you can destroy the oil pan. But if you want to try the oil pan, get a board, put it under there and put the jack on it for you. Don't bend something. I've done them without replacing the steering column bolts and moving all
