Changing only one tire on a fwd car

Can I change only one tire on a fwd car? 2009 Ford Taurus SEL. The rear tires have significant tread left, like 7-8/32, while there is still some (like 4-5/32) on one in the front and the other is almost down to the wear bars, at 3/32 or less.

I'd be more worried about uneven traction when you hit the brakes hard. Uneven tire traction results in instability. Tires are a lot cheaper than bodywork - I'd replace both.

Yes, there's the same differential in the car. The differential can compensate for the increase, it will just turn the axle slightly quicker on the side with more wear.  Technically, they're called transaxles, because the transmission and differential are all located together. Get an alignment if you suspect abnormal wear. I don't know if you one tire was already lower or not.

I bought it used a few months ago and those were the tires it came with so idk if there’s any abnormal wear

How old are all the tyres?

Are they all still the original ones from 2009?

Just saw your message. The tires were from 2018/19. I ended up changing them both two weeks ago bc I had concerns about dry-rotting. Doral SDL sport $66 each from Walmart and they’re not cheap chinese tires. Doral is owned by Sumitomo. Unfortunately earlier this week I totaled the car crossing train tracks on some backroads at night.

Holy crap, that escalated quickly!

Ha yup. It’s all mechanical, the body is fine. Transmission is the main issue. You can read about it in my latest post.
