I have a question about my 2005 Chevrolet Colorado with 184396 miles on it. The reason I'm asking is because I'm getting code P0506 which is idle air control system how hard is that to change and do I need a mechanic to do it? Or can I do it myself for relatively cheap?

which engine

Just to provide an update on my 2005 Chevy Colorado, I can say that the problem is fixed. The throttle body had to be replaced and to my surprise the one we replaced was the original GM part from 2005. 16 years and nearly 185,000 miles and she runs and idles like a top again. Thank you to all the members who helped me in my previous post, you guys ROCK!

good stuff

MountainManJoe I was surprised how easy it was to change and unlike a Chevy tech told me I didn't have to program it because the computer reset itself. Although I did cheat a little with a Chilton manual in order to make sure we properly installed it. I do have one question about that though.. Could that have been making the engine run rich? Because it smelled like it was running rich before we changed it out now and smells better.

yeah absolutely. The throttle directly affects the fuel/air mixture proportions.

Sorry my last message was kind of weird I was doing a talk to text. I will get this taken care of on my own very soon but I have one last question. Do I need to remove the "beauty cover" in order to get the sensor out? And if so does the beauty cover have to be removed by bolts or can I pop it off with a screwdriver?

Ignore @doc. The advice he gave you is wrong. He's a very knowledgeable fella, but I don't think he has worked on modern vehicles, and some his knowledge doesn't apply to this millennium. Your truck doesn't have the valve that he's describing, so you'll never find it.

You don't usually get code P0506 by itself, because it's a symptom of other problems. There are many causes. Are you getting any OTHER trouble codes?

A vacuum leak
An air restriction in the intake air path or exhuast
A faulty positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve
Damaged/failed/dirty throttle body
Internal engine problem
Failed PCM

No I'm not getting any other codes and I had a mechanic clean the throttle body about a month ago

Also the only symptom that I'm having is when idling it idle's very rough it's very rough and the RP m's go down and then come backup that's only when I'm sitting at a is sitting at a light in a parking lot or just sitting idle. If I'm slowing down it does the same thing but it does not stall while driving or anything else.

Unplug the connector, remove two screws, remove old valve, install new valve (available everywhere), put two screws back, plug in the connector.  Done.  Save yourself getting ripped off for a few hundred bucks and do it yourself.

OK the last question that I have because I have never changed any of that stuff on this engine where is it located? There is a sensor that is a sensor that is plugged in at the top of the throttle body where the beauty cover is close to the firewall and I'm wondering if that is it?

In a search box type in "2005 Chev. Colorado IAC valve location."  When the page comes up, click on "images" at the top of the page.  You'll get a hundred pictures and diagrams.  Hope it helps.  You CAN do this.  Go for it.

Awesome I appreciate your help thank you so much. Bperiod by the way I mean told that the sensor cannot be changed unless the full throttle body is changed but I just had a mechanic tell me that that is BS.

Total BS.
