CV Boot Replacement

Hi Scotty,

Thank you for your great effort for making those videos which taught me so much about cars. I just had my 2005 Honda CRV auto with 140000KM mileage done with annual registration/safety check. As usual, the shop failed the inspection saying that I had a bald tire which only run for 30000K and also a leaking CV Boot. I had taken a photo myself showing the leak. See this link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/9xE9C61eJXccBH3J8

They are go to charge me AUD$145 for the CV Boot replacement. Do you think the leak is a major issue ? And do you think the replacement cost is reasonable ? Thanks a lot and hope to hear some advice from you soon.

Best Regards,

Randy

Well that's pretty much the going price cuz you got to take it all apart when the grease leaks out it wears now if it's not cracking yet you can drive it when it starts clacking it's warning you need to replace it. But here in the United States you can buy the entire axle from places like AutoZone for about $60 and you could replace it yourself it's not that bad to take apart and put back together then you have new axles boots and joints

Thanks Scotty for your quick reply. I believe the cost quoted only covers the replacement of the rubber boot. The problem is I only have a few days left for the registration renewal. So I think I have no choice but to accept the quote. Also, just for info, every auto parts/accessories here in Australia are selling more than double the price than in US.

Cheers

Randy

IMHO, if the price were converted to USD, it would be about $107, which is a fair price.

Most shops in my neck of the woods only swap out the axle, they don’t replace just the boot. And charge at least ~$200 USD for parts and labor. Taking it to the dealer would cost ~$1000 USD.

That’s cool if you can replace the boot just by itself for the price that was quoted in AUD. Fair price.

Thanks for the info, Kaizen.

Turned out that they can't replaced the boot by itself due to a seized bolt that they can't removed. They said the CX axle will be damaged if removed forcefully. After all, they put in a new clamp for the boot and charged me AUD$80.
