[Solved] Did I hurt my 1993 Accord with 132,325 miles by accidently using a synthetic blend oil?

I've owned this car since new and have faithfully used only Castrol GTX 5w-30 conventional oil which I personally change every 3 months. I've been buying the oil for last few years from Amazon using their "Subscribe & Save" service. About 6 months ago they switched the oil without telling me from the conventional blend to a synthetic blend (not 100%). The label hardly changed so I didn't notice the difference. In fact according to Castrol's site they no longer make a conventional oil in this weight anymore.

These days the car is mostly a "garage queen" and doesn't see many miles anymore. In fact a local dealer has it on their showroom floor along with my TSX since they have so few new cars. I think I've put on about less than 100 miles on it since I noticed the change to synthetic. In my other 2 cars I use Mobil 1 (5w-30) full synthetic and thought about switching just to help consolidate my oil purchases but held off due to things I read concerning possible leaks and other issues. I always figured if isn't broke... why break it?

So since the decision has been made for me do I continue using this brand and oil type or should I just embrace the screw-up and start using Mobil 1 (5W-30) which is a full synthetic and keep my fingers crossed?

Thanks for your help...

BTW for reference here are some pics of my cars

That is because synthetic oil is superior in every way, and there's no reason to go back. Synthetic oil has hit the mainstream and every manufacturer now recommends it. It is FULLY backwards compatible. Mass manufacturing has ramped up, and economy of scale has brought synthetic prices down to what conventional would be anyway. Just keep using what Amazon sends you. I'm sure your car will be fine.

Very interesting. Please tell us more. Are they renting it from you or do you have some kind of agreement, or did you put it up for sale? Are customers taking it out for test drives?

Thanks for sharing the photos. Your Accord is in fabulous shape.

There's so much info out there when it comes to synthetics unfortunately there's also misinformation. Sometimes it's hard to separate the two...

At some point I guess you just have to roll the dice.

As for the dealer, a friend of mine who is an Acura collector and YouTuber has rotated his collection through the Acura dealer to gain space in his 8 car garage. He's always acquiring something.

When I needed to remodel my 3-car garage I thought I might do the same. There's no money changing hands and no one is driving the cars they're strictly there on display as conversation pieces. It's a win-win as the dealer gets different cars to show and we get some workspace in our garages.

I'm frequently told the CB7 often gets as much of not more attention than the NSX and other newer models. I never thought these cars would ever become so popular... They receive offers so often they put "not for sale"signs in our windshields. Ironic isn't it?

You're right, and at some point the advice may have been valid, but it's obsolete info now. But people are slow to change their thinking. The oil companies have adapted. These days you simply don't have to worry about it any more, and yeah nothing beats 1st hand experience.
Thanks for a the explanation. And yeah free air conditioned storage sounds like a great deal. They probably keep it shined up too. I'm sure people would love to get their hands on it in this market.

You’ll be fine. Just stick to the recommended oil specification which your owner’s manual specifies (synthetic blend should do just fine).

As it is, you’re not driving the thing much..

Thanks... what do you think of going with the Mobil 1. Is it more detrimental to go with another brand and a full synthetic?

For your extremely low running and very short oil change interval, just go with whatever is cheapest.

No. Nor will there be any problem in continuing to use the synthetic blend.

You have not hurt that beautiful ride. In my opinion Just stay using synthetic.

Thanks everyone appreciate the info. Will transition to Mobil 1 and hope for the best.

Just a little insecure about changing after all this time...
