Should I replace the rear axle, or scrap this rust heap

Whats up, got a dilemma, do i get a $4,800 refund for my car or pay to get this rear differential replaced? Also the lower and upper ball joints have play. The car is a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis with 98k miles & its Automatic

Judging from the condition of the car, the axle won't be the last of your problems. Take the $5k (or sell it. People will buy almost anything these days) and get something newer.

How much to get the rear diff housing to be replaced? 


$500 for the part
$300 for the labor

Yeah i got pre purchase inspections for the last two but not this one because it drove good & i looked under and it looked alright but i missed a spot! Lesson learned.
