[Solved] Displaced anti squeal shim on a brake pad (image attached). Safe to remove?

I was bleeding my brakes and noticed that the previous owner did a lousy job of replacing the brake pads. On the photo below, the anti squeal shim almost touches the rotor. I ordered a new set of rotors and brake pads (front axle) and need to wait a week to get the order. Toyota Yaris 2007 with 170k miles, the car is front wheel drive. I want to drive to ocean 160 miles this weekend with the current brake pads, but I plan to remove the shim altogether beforehand (because it may reach the rotor, resulting in grinding noise).

Please advise if removing the shim is safe in my case. Can I safely and comfortably drive the car without the shim plates. Thanks.

The shim does nothing but possibly remove a little bit of breaking noise when you break you can drive forever without them
