Do I need premium gas?

Hello Scotty, I just bought a 2007 Acura TL. The previous owner had it for about 2 years but used unleaded fuel but Acura recommends 91. Should I make the switch or is it okay to keep using 87?

If Acura says 91, use 91.

Stick to what the manufacturer recommends, when it comes to fuel.

You can play with a higher octane rating, but it’s dangerous to use a lower octane fuel than, what the OEM recommends.

Your owner’s manual will give you the definitive fuel/choice of fuel which you should use.

And if you travel; many states have different Octane ratings on Low, midrange and Premium; so pay attention to the numbers. I keep some Octane Booster in my car.

Since the previous owner used 87 and I’m switching to 91, is there anything I need to do to make sure my car is safe? My plan was to just let it get all the way down then fill it up but I’m not sure if that’s the best move

If it makes you feel better, wait till your low fuel warning illuminates, then fill up with 91. Really though, it won’t matter even if you fill 91 right away..

Follow the owner’s manual.  See below at 7:17

I agree. My BMW is supposed to use Premium so I do.

If the owners manual says 91, use 91. That’s what they are built for.

If it works on 87 or 89 and doesn't knock, then use it.

I would stick with what the manual says. I  know new cars can adapt to the lower octane. I am not sure if  your car has that.

Use whatever the manufacturer recommends in your owners manual. 91 octane level is premium in my state, so I would use premium.

Using lower octane would decrease the performance of the engine by messing with the timing of it.

With modern cars and engines, you don’t have to worry about making any adjustments yourself.  That engine was designed to work optimally with premium, and with reduced power if using lower octane fuel.  Also, do you get any knocking or any codes with the 87?  In any event, it should be fine putting in premium now.

Well, I have only had the car for a week and only driven it for a total of like 3 or 4 hours. I did get a weird warning that said “tighten gas lid” and I thought it was the purge solenoid but it went away after tightening it. The car runs good and smooth, but I want to make sure I can make my motor last as long as possible. I’m a broke teen though and these gas prices are gonna hurt 😭😭

Just fill the tank. No need to worry about it.

Cool appreciate it

The previous owner of my new car drove it for about 40k miles using 87, but Acura recommends 91. I will be making the switch, but what is the safest way to do so to make sure my engine isn’t damaged? I was going to just let it get down all the way then fill it up with 91, but idk if I need valve adjustments or anything because my car doesn’t do it automatically.

Thanks guys!
