Does the AC compressor run if I have the AC on but turn the dial to hot or halfway?

Does the AC compressor run in the winter too if I turn it on AC mode but keep temperature at hot or halfway?

As title states. If I put thr setting on window defrost, or just normal ac/max AC but the temperature at hottest or even halfway or somewhere in between, does turning the AC button make the compressor run even in winter?

FYI, it’s a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis GS with 102K. I replaced the compressor as well as the AC temperature control switch several times, but it still had intermittent AC blowing cold issues. At times it would work great, at times it would only blow hot air. Changed the relays, changed and recharged the refrigerant, but still. I think it has something to do with the condenser or evaporator but I never got around to doing those. I will see if it works next summer as intended. We did have an abnormally hot day a few weeks back, and it worked perfectly so it’s definitely a confusing thing.

but I digress. Does it still work even if the temperature control is on hot, but with AC button mode engaged?

It may not work if it's on max hot and A/C. That's kinda contradictory, don't you think? Do you want A/C or heat? It will work in the winter time if you put it on defrost. It doesn't change the temperature of the air, it removes some humidity from the airstream which helps evaporate condensation from your windows. Pop the hood and check the compressor. Providing you've done everything correctly, this will tell you whether or not it's working.

It won't run except very briefly in the winter time at max cold and max A/C. The computer is programmed to sense the evaporator temperature and turn off the system before it starts icing up. The system is also pressure sensitive. If it doesn't sense system pressures within an acceptable range, it will not operate.

The AC cycles on in the winter when you have the HVAC system set to "Defrost."
