Engine Avensis Valvematic vs VVT-i

Hello,

I want to buy a Toyota Avensis second hand. The problem I have is related to the engine, because from what I have documented 2ZR-FE (VVT-I) is more reliable than 2ZR-FAE (Valvematic).

On Avensis and Auris (these two models interest me) for Europe only Valvematic were made, and VVT-I especially for America.

Some details about what I want:

Budget: 10-15,000 euros

Year:> 2014

Transmission: manual

Fuel: petrol.

Cylindrical capacity: 1.6 or 1.8.

My residence:  Eastern Europe --> Romania

From your experience, as a community, is Valvematic reliable? What problems did you have? Any tip would be very helpful.

Hybrids I don't want, because  in case of a defect, the situation mechanics are outdated. Any opinion, from a user of Toyota Avensis and Auris, is more than useful.

Thank you.

The same valvematic engine is used here on some Corolla LE Eco models. They have proven troublesome with the valvematic technology. Stick to the regular 2ZR-FE. If you can't get one of those there, then its not a huge problem just make sure to maintain it and beware of the technology and it should be relatively reliable.

Hello!

There are some basic info about ZR engines (Link). Perhaps also this site helps (Link).

Before I decided for Auris, I had been researching cars for over a year.

There are some sites with basic info about cars:

Auris

Avensis

Good luck!

Also, what you know about 1.33 VVT-I and 1.2 Turbo?

I don't have any experience if them but people over in Europe tell me that the 1.33 engine is an excellent one for reliability and can last a long time, but a little slow. I would avoid turbochaged engines.

@g-t might know something about euro spec toyota engines

I have 1.33 VVT-I 2 years old Auris with 22k km on odo. So far so good. I hope they fixed oil burning issue. I plan to use it at least 15 years.
Used 1.2 turbo, as old as mine, costs more than mine did when it was new. That engine came out in 2015. So I'd rather wait and see how reliable they are on a long run.
