Engine fan on high

Hi Scotty,

  • I have a 2014 Ford F150 FX4 5.0L engine with 206,000 miles. Runs great but the engine fan comes on when I'm driving over 50 mph or when it's windy outside even though the gauge reads normal temperature. My mechanic replaced the thermostat and that didn't fix it. He then replaced the thermostat with an OEM thermostat (didnt charge me for this) and the fan still continues to kick on high when driving over 50 mph and doesn't stop for several minutes when returning to 30 mph.

Thank you for your time,

OK -   the place you should look next is the electrical side of things. There is a temperature sensor on your engine that is hooked up to the electrical relay that switches on the fan. I'd check or replace the relay and sensor. If that doesn't work, you're having problems in your ECU and you would want to have a high-level scan before addressing the problem.

Have your mechanic check the fan control module next.

Just out of curiosity, how do you know whether the fan is on when you are driving 50mph?

I can hear it.

It's very loud. I can hear it while I'm driving on the highway. Sometimes it kicks on when I first start it up in the morning when the engine is cold and it's 20 degrees Fahrenheit outside
