Engine Swap 1995 Toyota Tacoma

Scotty,

I have a 1995 Toyota Tacoma, manual transmission, 3.4L V6 engine and it’s 4X4! I recently just had a head gasket blow and I have 333K miles on the original engine! I found a place that has the same engine with approximately 50k - 60k miles on it and I’m thinking about doing an engine swap with my truck. The gentleman gave me a final price of $3900 for the engine and for them to do the repairs/labors and replace all my fluids, all the gaskets in the engine and they’re gonna do all the necessary tests to make sure the vehicle is running efficiently and safely. I think this is a remarkable deal considering I have 333k on the original engine, but want to ask for your thoughts about it. I don’t want a $400 - $600 vehicle payment each month. That’s why I am considering doing an engine swap. The engine is a 5VZ-FE straight from Japan so it’s JDM. Would love to hear your thoughts on this deal! Thanks Scotty.

Well yeah the Japanese don't drive much. It's a small country with limited roads. So it's totally believable that they have that kind of mileage and if the guy has done it before, I had many people do that in Houston and they were happy in the end

JDM engine replacement is often a good option, and the price quote seems reasonable as long as the rest of the truck is in good condition.  Just be aware that JDM motors are sometimes not.... quite.... the same as OEM.  If it runs rough you may have to send it to a good tuner who knows the ins and outs of that particular engine.

I apologize it is an OEM engine that is a genuine Toyota part. I still assume it that it might sound different. But I’m hoping all runs well with it for the final result. I appreciate your guys feedback and I’m happy to be a new member! Thank you guys

That was one of the first years of that engine. Toyota used them in quite a few models including the 4Runner, T100, and tundra.

Excellent engine, you still see plenty vehicles still running around with them, and many way over the mileage yours had.
