Exhaust Has Strong Gas Odor When Warming Up And Vibrates At Stop Lights.

2001 Corolla 200000 mi automatic.

I've recently done some maintenance on my Corolla - new throttle position sensor, cleaned throttle body, cleaned MAF sensor, new plugs (after finding the old ones drenched in oil) and valve cover gasket.  My fuel trim and MAF readings seem good.  The throttle work and sensor fixed a hard-to-diagnose intermittent bucking problem.  There's no exhaust smoke and the car burns about 1 quart of oil per 3000 mi.  But it does have heavy gas odor when started until it warms up.  Is this a catalyitic issue?

Also, I wondered about the vibration at stop lights.  Can holding a stick on each mount to feel the vibration help find any bad ones?  It doesn't seem like any engine issues remain to be fixed.  I recently put in a transmission that replaced one that had chopped up pieces of metal in it, including the axle rings.  I wondered if the idling vibration over time caused any fatique fractures in the transmission.

Thanks!

I would investigate to see if your spark plug wires are still soaked with oil which then in turn causes missfire.  If those wires are not completely dry..I suspect they either should be cleaned throughly with Brake Kleen or equal or really outright replace those wires

It may also help the idle situation as well....

If it has a fuel smell I would look into your injectors as well for visual leaks and in sound. Maybe a specific cylinder if you disconnect one by one it may be hanging open

Thanks, I have to try it - I notice the idle speed does make a difference. If I raise the rpm just a bit, the vibration ceases. I know it's supposed to be 750 or so.

Your car is running rich. Maybe leaky fuel injectors. When you rev up, you consume the extra fuel and that’s why the vibration goes away.

Thanks, I was ready to get new engine mounts, but had a suspicion there was something else.
