Which First car for a 16yr old?

Now I'm gonna turn 16 soon and my parents are already getting on me about my license. Don't get me wrong, I love cars and I'm a huge Fast and Furious fan. But I'm wondering, what are some of the best first cars? I was looking at some cars including the 05' Chevy Impala, a Toyota Corolla or Camry, or a Civic. And if so, should I get a manual transmission, or an automatic for my first car?

Also, what's your opinion on a 2007 Mercedes-Benz S550 4matic. It has around 175,000 miles and it's an automatic.

I found out I put all of this in the wrong section, so here you go.

Insurance will be VERY high unless you just get liability.

Okay, your 16 years old. Here's a few scenarios.

1st: You literally have nothing, maybe $500 to your name and don't work. I would get a used bike off of craigslist if you don't have a bike already and bike to the nearest store that will hire you. Work there. Get a better more comfortable seat, thank me later.

2nd: You have 1 or 3 thousand dollars to your name, and you work 1 to 3 short days a week. Your going to look for a plain vehicle with special features such as a working engine, steering, a working transmission, and seats. Bonus points for negotiation would be stains, blotches, dents, bondo, ripped carpets, and it smelling horrible. This can be any 80's to early 2,000's car. Don't get a Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac, or a luxury car brand unless its a Lexus or Acura, if you can get one that cheap. A 1991 Saturn for $500 or $1,000 that still runs with a manual transmission would be fantastic. Don't get a late 90's Saturn because they were bad. You might find an 80's Honda crx for $1500, a 1994 Toyota celica for $300, a mercury grand marquis for $1350, a ford crown Vic, a 90's Datsun sedan for $350, something like that. Just whatever you can get cheapest that runs and doesn't seem like its going to fail in a week.

3rd scenario: Your working between 3 and 5 days a week, pretty much every day when you get home from school and/or weekends. You have over $6,000 saved up. This is where you get a Toyota corolla or Honda civic for 2 to 4 grand with a manual transmission. Here, you can splurge a little bit by getting one with working A/C and/or heat, not as many holes and dings as the 2nd scenario (but still some, for negotiation points).

4th scenario: You have been working with your dad, mom, grandparents, other friends/family since you were 10 or 12 years old, you saved literally every penny from when you were a kid. You have around 14 to 18 grand in the bank now, and you have been making 4 to 6 grand a year for 2 years. You still work 1 job because you want to focus on studies. I would get a newer corolla or civic still with almost 0 cosmetic damage. Low miles is your main goal here.

5th scenario: You have been cleaning houses since you were 6 years old. You sacrificed your grades a bit (you do a little better than bare minimum) to squeeze more pay out of your day. Study halls, you do side gigs on the internet because your an internet freak, you really know how to pull money in, and you make a few hundred dollars a month just from study hall internet side hustles. You also work 2 jobs, 6 days a week, and you make 20 to 25 grand a year from everything, because your a rockstar. At 13, you started investing with your family in mutual funds, You have a net worth of around 200k (140 in mutual fund, 20k in the bank). This is where you deserve to buy a brand new Mitsubishi mirage or Chevy spark, manual transmission, for under 10 grand cash, and not worry for years about anything, because of the warranties. DO NOT BUY THESE VEHICLES USED! DO NOT BUY THEM USED WITH OVER 100 MILES ON THEM!

6th scenario: You and your family have been doing crypto, real estate flipping, and got very lucky with high risk very high reward stocks, over and over again, since you knew how to understand what they were saying. You also could have gotten very lucky on YouTube and make 40k a year from that, or twitch. Your net worth is $500k to 700k and you have $30k to 40k cash. Here, buy a brand new Honda civic or Toyota corolla, or if you want to have fun, a Mazda Miata. You can always buy less, but you could afford it here. You don't have to care about most things about the car for at least 10 years because they last so long.

7th scenario: You were a baby youtuber who loved playing with your cats, when you werent making pizza, or vegan food, and talking about the british royal family (Jexi reference). Point is, you had a VERY high IQ and were playing video games since you were 2 years  old. At 4 years old, you beat 99% of all fortnite or minecraft players. You  got a fabulous  deal where fortnite, COD, and/or minecraft sponsored you, or you won a contest worth 100 grand, by the time you were 6. You get  into crypto very early on when you were 6, and make out VERY lucky. You hated school because it was holding you back. You had a  1 million dollar net worth by the time you were 10, and now your a multi millionaire. You made money while you slept. Buy whatever car you want, set some aside for insurance like I said, and maintenance.

In all of these scenarios, watch out for gold diggers, make or female.

Yes, all of these are examples. Switch out some numbers and/or facts, income streams, etc as needed.

Thank you.

For $3000, get a manual Civic. Avoid automatic transmissions because they may be on their way out or needing work (if high mileage).

A manual transmission these days is the best anti theft device..

Look for ones which are cosmetically damaged but mechanically sound. Bargain hard & fix the paint/dents as & when you save up.

Whatever you end up buying, be sure to have it thoroughly inspected by a professional mechanic, before purchase. You don’t want to end up with an endless money pit as your first car.

Also try typing first car into the search bar on the top right corner.

Congratulations & all the best!

walk or ride a bike!

 you're 16!

Your parents don't OWE you a darn thing!

Enlist in the military at 18 and then pay your own way and stop mooching off mom and dad!

I dont think OP said anything about him/her mooching off their parents. They didnt say "My parents want to help me pay for a car" or anything like that.

But yeah, if they have nothing, riding a bike would be better. If they have something, a cheap beater car will do.

Manual Civic or Corolla. As has been said, it's a pretty good anti-theft device.

It's not crazy difficult to learn how to drive a manual (clutch pedal in- shift gear- clutch pedal out gently), they're cheaper to repair and less likely to fail due to being a less complex design.

Also should you ever need to hire a car outside of the U.S. manual tends to be significantly cheaper and you would have a much larger choice of vehicle.

Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord. Stay away from the the Mercedes and the Impala. Anything Honda or Toyota should work (except the Honda Odyssey)

Ur a teen and you are looking at an old S class...

Those have got to be one of the biggest money pits on the planet. Also, it has 175k miles which is a lot for an 07 s class, unless it was highway miles. If your parents are rich and can afford to repair the thing, go ahead, otherwise, run away from that thing. 2005 impalas are rolling piles of junk since it's GM, I would stick to the Camry, corolla, and civic (and both the manual and automatics are good, although the automatics in the honda civics can be somewhat weak if ur talking about 01-05 and stay away from the 2006 Civic since they had cracking engine blocks which can mean big bucks when it happens)

If you are looking at an alternative to the s class, get a Lexus ES, those can last a long time. Acura (like TL, TSX, RDX) and Infinitis (FX35, G35, Q45, EX35) are nice too, but they are sportier, so they can ride firm. Lexus has way softer rides than the two.

First of all, don't get a mercedes. Second of all, don't get the flagship mercedes. Third of all, don't get a flagship old mercedes with 175k miles on it; the maintnence on that thing is insanity. Get a used lexus gs350 from the same year because it has luxury and power, which I think you wiould apprecite as a teen as it has over 300 hp to the rear wheels.
