Ford Explorer 2008 Eddie Bauer 2WD 4L V6 - Vibrating When Idle

Dear Scotty,

Please help. We have a 2008 Ford Explorer 2WD 4L V6. Has constant vibration, but sometime vibrates more strongly when idle or reversing. Engine light is on, blinks sometimes while idle or running. We've taken it to a 2 shops. First we took it to a friend mechanic, who changed the following:

- fuel injectors

-drive belt

-idler pulley

-tensioner

- ignition coil 2 (because he says engine cylinder 2 misfires)

- did compression test OK

But it still did not change. He suspects it's the Power Control Module, although we have just replaced it from Ford last January (still inder warrant).

We took the car to Ford and told them of the findings. What they did were the following

- checked the engine and inspected inside but found no fault

-Performed injector flow test -all passed

- Remove intake manifold and passenger valve cover to ispect valves springs all springs ok.

- re test found outPCM #2 injector driver faulty at times.

- they replaced Ingition coil pack.

Still the same issues cylinder 2 misfires.

Their probable cause is PCM.

Also important to note we have just replaced the sparkplugs and coil.

What else do you think it could be? Or we what else do you think we should check?

Thank you for your help, and more power to you.

God bless!

Aside from what @yaser said, do a critical visual inspection of all vacuum lines for cracks and leaks.

Thank you. I will reaerch how to do that. Hopefully it resolves the issue. More power to you.

This is one of those, Which came first, the chicken or the egg? problems.

Is the #2 cylinder misfire causing the computer to shutdown the #2 fuel injector driver to protect the catalytic converter or is a faulty #2 fuel injector driver causing the #2 cylinder to misfire?

The dealer said the #2 fuel injector driver is faulty at times.

That might work to your advantage in diagnosing this.

Someone can hook up a scanner and use either the Misfire Monitor or the Power Balance test while simultaneously observing the #2 fuel injector control wire waveform on a scope.

Do the #2 cylinder misfires begin racking up BEFORE that fuel injector control signal drops out or AFTER that fuel injector control signal drops out?

If the misfires start before the computer shuts down the #2 fuel injector driver you really can't fault it for just doing its job to protect the catalytic converter

Both tell you it is the PCM and you got it under warranty. Considering all the stuff you have done, I would change the PCM.

Thank you very much. But then again, PCM is just their speculation because they could not find anything wrong with the engine. I'm thinking there might be something else wrong with it because PCM was brand new but still the engine light is on. Code P1296. Thank you very much.
