Hi Scotty,
My daily driver, a 2019 Ford Escape I bought used (cuz nothing in my price range was available last year) is about to go on a road trip from Boston to Florida ~1500 miles. Doing my trip pre-check, in addition to finding out that the temp-spare was at 23 lbs of pressure I noticed that there was a "little black box" in the upper right corner with a couple of RJ11 wires plugged into it. Since the Ford app told me I also needed to update my Sync3 software, I called Ford customer service and was very disappointed. First they said the new software "fixed things." I said that things aren't broke to which they replied, "we recommend you update your software because it will enhance the drivability of your car." Ha!
BTW, the spare had 23 psi of pressure and should have had 60. I filled that up.
Second, I asked about the little black box and whether or not setting some big speakers with big magnets above that box would cause any problem, and what was the box?
The Ford corporate guy said "we can't answer your question about what that box is. You should contact your local Ford dealer about your question."
Gheeze, Ford support can't answer a question about what a box is in a car that they have the VIN number for and pass me off to a dealer??? RIDICULOUS!
#1 I'll keep the woofers with the big magnets away from that box
#2 I won't update the Sync3 software on the priciple of "if it ain't broke, I ain't fixing it."
#3 Is Ford customer service so scared of answering a question about a car's hardware that they'll get a law suit that they refer people to a local dealer?
This is the first Ford I've owned and probably the last.
Thanks,
66Wildcat (I still maintain my grandpa's 66 Wildcat and yes, I have a dwell meter! 🙂

if the dealer installed it , then no. Did you try asking them?

that'll happen after 5 years
If you financed the car the mystery device might be for GPS tracking so the repo man can find the vehicle easily if payments are missed.
I would not be surprised that in the future, self-driving Teslas will repossess themselves. Who knows, they might keep you in the car until you pay.
