I own a 79 el camino and the fuel gauge was reading "full" when I know it barely holds 5 gallons in.
I replaced the fuel sending unit and reinstalled the fuel tank and gave it some gas only for the fuel gauge to now read "empty"
I dont understand why it's doing that. Please tell me I don't need to get a different fuel sending unit. I got the right part I just don't understand why its not reading correctly still.
you haven't ruled out the wiring, or the actual gauge
If the gauge reads empty all the time chances are the wire from the sender to the gauge is shorted to ground.
You have a new sender so we'll assume it's working and not an internal problem.
Just disconnect the wire from the sender to the gauge at the back of the gauge.
The gauge should move to the full position. If it does, and assuming that new sender is functioning correctly, your sender wire is shorted to ground somewhere between the tank and the gauge

Thank you! I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Take care!
