Hi there,

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD with a Duramax diesel with 175,846 miles and I am looking to purchase a scan tool for self use. I am not afraid to spend a couple hundred dollars on one. I have checked out a few scan tools already and a lot of people say they don't work with diesels. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello all, thank you to everyone who replied to my post! First I will say I went and looked at the list of scan tools DayWalker (@daywalker) made: https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/postid/113598/

Now the scan tool I went with was the BlueDriver Pro OBDll Scan Tool.

My second choice for a scan tool was the INNOVA CarScan Pro 5610 which is more advanced if that's what you are looking for.

See my write up below:  for each of those there is a link to see if it works with your exact vehicle, check it out.  The Innova one will even tell you what services it can perform.

Autel maxicom mk808.

@daywalker not personally no but an old co worker used it for his mid 2000s duramax and said it worked great for him. I’m still rockin the ol thinkOBD 100 haha.

I mention because I got this e-mail from Autel North America on supported North American versions (Scotty’s Tool page lists some that are NOT North American versions, buyer beware):

“The list of authorized diagnostic tablets [in North America] is short.

MX808
MX808TS
TS608
MS906BT
MS906TS
MS908 (includes the P, S, and S Pro)
Elite
MS909
MS919
Ultra
IM508
IM608

Anything that is MP or MK is not a US tool. Also the above tools can be sold by unAuthorized US dealers but will NOT receive warranty or support from Autel US. They will also not be able to bypass the security gateway in 2018+ Chrylser vehicles.“

Whoever (non authorized dealer) sells you the non-North American versions can also potentially be scamming you;  I’ve heard stories people buy the scan tool, then a few months later it stops working altogether and they are screwed, no way to get support or help.

@daywalker huh well good to know 👍 didn’t know anything about that. The thinkOBD has done fine by me so I’ve never looked into other scan tools.
