I'm planning on buying a 1999 Honda Accord LX, with an automatic transmission, it has 99k. Everything seems pretty good on the car, my issue is the previous owner is using full synthetic in it, would it be alright to switch back to conventional? Or should I look somewhere else?
Living in Michigan.
Regards!
Besides price, why do you want to switch to conventional?
If a professional mechanic checks out the car & gives you the go ahead, sure. It may still have a lot of life left in it, if the mileage is genuine. I’d think twice though, if you plan on putting 20,000 miles a year on it.
All the best!
Well as for me going back to conventional oil, I feel as though I should go back to what the manufacturer says to use. Especially since it's been extremely hot recently. But ig I'm not the expert here.
As for the price for a well maintained car with all of the receipts to back it up for $4,500 I feel is a fair price for a car I know for a fact is reliable from owning several of the same year. I'll definitely have it checked out by a trusted mechanic.
If you plan to buy it, make sure the transmission is fully checkerboard a pro. Also the timing belt needs to be replaced if it has not been done yet and being a interference engine, you don’t want to postpone it.
I definitely will thanks so much!
You’re welcome. Good luck.
If the previous owner has been using full synthetic (which is superior to conventional) I would continue to stick to that. The key is to make sure you use the same viscosity oil outlined in the user manual as well as meeting the Honda specs (it will list the spec number in the manual and somewhere on the bottle as well). Also, stick to one brand moving forward (don’t keep changing brands).
