[Solved] Synthetic or Conventional

Hi Scotty,

I’m purchasing a 2006 Silverado with the 4.8 V8 that has 70k miles. The original owner has  used conventional oil. I have some Mobil1 full synthetic in the garage that was for my previous car this truck is replacing. Since the mileage is relatively low can I switch to full synthetic or should I just stick with conventional? There are so many conflicting thoughts on this so I needed to ask an expert. Thanks in advance for your help.

It's very simple. There's no need to make it complicated.

First of all, it is THE MOST asked question we get. That's why we put it in the FAQ. Please always check there first. Then try searching forum, and if you still aren't satisfied then go ahead and ask.

can I switch

you can switch as much as you like. Brands. Synthetic . Whatever.

Use whatever meets the specs in your owner's manual, that's it. That's why it exists. They made it 100% worry free for your benefit.

Look on the back label of the oil bottle. Look for the API certification.

You don't need fancy oil. You don't need "high mileage" oil, or any specific brand, etc.

Save yourself some money and get the discounted oil. Just change it often.

Thanks - I’ll do a better job searching next time.

Many years ago when synthetic oils were in their infancy there were debates about using it in older engines, would it cause leaks and whether one should switch or not. Improvements have been made in synthetic oil since then and today's synthetic oil is better than conventional oil. Bottom line, those days are long gone as synthetic oil is the superior oil.

Switching from conventional oil to synthetic oil in your truck would be an improvement. Of course you want to use the same, or rather the correct viscosity when you switch.
