How do I fix Nissan 240sx high idle

Scotty, first off thank you for all your informative videos. They’ve really helped me learn a lot throughout the last couple of years & gives me plenty to do since leaving the Army; especially with this whole covid situation.

With that being said, I’m having some serious idle issues with my vehicle.

Nissan 240sx 1992 S13

Engine: SR20DET ‘94

5speed manual transmission

(Quick history)

Bought the car with the engine swap completed with a ton of issues.

The car idled around 1100rpms and had trouble taking off from dead stops/lights with the rpms dropping almost to completely stall.

Discovered a major leak,(exhaust manifold to turbo), and decided to not cheap out by getting junkyard parts since I couldn’t guarantee the fix.

Continued to find all kinds of problems once the manifold was off and decided to fix everything I found, leading me to an almost fully rebuilt vehicle.

Relevant Details:

rebuilt head; 276 tomei poncams, ferrea springs, modified to duel guides(maintained hydraulic lifters & stock valves)

new gt2178r turbo

Tomei 740cc injectors

dw fuel R1000 pressure regulator (modified no fuel return)

dw 400 fuel pump

optima red top battery

P2M coil packs

NGK BKR8EIX spark plugs

new gaskets & hoses all the way around

everything was throughly cleaned as it was dirty beyond normal buildup

Everything was reassembled following your guidance along with both FSM’s from Nissan, (USD/JAPAN)

PROBLEM:After correcting all the vacuum leaks, cleaning the iacv, & setting the timing, I cannot get this engine idling properly. It initially would stall immediately after cranking over, until I adjusted the iacv screw to allow just a little bit of airflow coming in.

It now idles, but sits steady at 2000rpm after a slight surge between 2-2500rpm for approximately 7min.

NOTES:

Relocated from OK to AK.

Found what I believe to be a rear main seal leak, so I ordered a new clutch, flywheel & all seals and ARP hardware to take care of it all at once.

Fuel and Temp gauge do not work_worked fine before(needle reads to max levels on both)

Cannot shift into gears when engine is running,(slightly rides/rpms drop, but no gear engaged). Shifts clunky when engine is off

Gauge Levels at Idle:

(All gauges are directly installed)

AFR(Lambda) .32-.55

Boost 14-16

Oil Pressure 25-30

Oil Temp(Warm) 69-108

Water Temp(Warm) 107

New thermostat/radiator caps

All new fluids put in everywhere; motul and redline

Driving me crazy & I’d really like to drive it once the weather breaks.

If you need anymore details or a video, please let me know!

PLEASE HELP!!!

well here's the rub that thing has been so highly modified and no one knows if any of the modifications are done correctly that the computer would most certainly have to be changed to fit those modifications but that is an old car a 94 and as far as I know they cannot be reprogrammed they would have to be replaced by someone who really knew how to do one to make it match all those modifications

.even if you brought it to me it would be a quandary because that old I would have get very little data it was only 1995 and newer that had actual streaming data I could analyze good luck though

Hey Scotty, I know it’s been a while, but I found the issue to be the turbo blanket I installed blocking the actuator from operating properly; holding it closed, causing it over boost at idle. Crazy simple fix. Just removed the turbo blanket & won’t use it until I upgrade to an external wastegate.

To get to this diagnosis, I basically started over, going through everything fuel and ignition related and matching components to make sure I didn’t do anything ridiculous, while waiting for some tools to come in for completing my clutch swap.
I’m working on tuning as I’m learning how to use AEM management software, so that made me triple check everything as well.

Very much appreciated Scotty!

Looks like I’ll have to learn how to tune.

I have a stand-alone AEM Series 2 that came with the car & I’m pretty sure it was tuned just as crappy as everything was put together. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Just downloaded all the necessary software straight from the site, but I’m not going to change any codes until I’m confident in what I’m doing.

As soon as I find the fix, I’ll post it here.

Thanks again Scotty!

You point out that the fuel pump is modified.  I'd start there.  As long as you continue to play around with it.  LOL!
