Scotty,

How do I find a good local mechanic (like you!) in my area?  I need someone to check out a used car before I buy it.

Thanks,

What ^ said, talk to the local auto parts store if you don't have any friends that can recommend you to one. We deal with a lot of the shops in the area and know which ones are just out to make a quick buck.

AAA (American Automobile Association) approved.  If they screw up, get on Google and Yelp and leave a low rating.

What I tell family and friends is look at the place. You can tell a lot from how a place is run.

I was a tech for 20 yrs but do IT now so dont have access to a shop and I have to go through this process also.

* Does the owner care about their business?

* Are the techs in uniform?

* How busy are they? Do the local go there?

* Is the place clean? Within reasonable working conditions but if the owner cares he will make sure it is descent for customers.

* Is there at least 1 long term tech there?

* How long have the techs been there? Good techs won't stay in a crappy shop for long. They have too much integrity.

* BIG ONE - How long have they been in business? I have noticed most shady shops don't last beyond 5 yrs for one reason or another.

Now no one has a crystal ball and yes you could stumble on a new shop that is good but it is much like looking for a good restaurant.

Trust your gut instincts. Feel the place out.

Test a place out with something small. An oil change, change a bulb or fix a flat. Don't wait till the check engine light is on.

Having a good relationship with a quality shop will save you many headaches form the relationship early.

Don't be so hard when something isn't perfect. Much can be said on how a shop handles a problem.

forgot - also see if there is a car show on the radio. They usually have shops vetted out already and know some of them personally. Here in AZ they actually have a website to find one.

Apart from asking at spares shops. Ask your friends, the ones that have car experience. You can also check Yell for reviews, Google the business you are thinking of.. I also get good service from the dealership. Although they are a little bit more expensive, they are held accountable by the maker. If they say something needs doing, I say "show me". I am sure that goes on file.
