How does it feel when your clutch is slipping?

1999 Honda Accord. 279K miles.

Last clutch job was around 150K miles back in 2006. (It actually didn’t need it. There were no symptoms. I got dupped by the dealer, before I knew better.)

Fast Forward to today. Start my car up, put it in first. And as I ease off the clutch and give it some gas, the car starts jerking. And that’s the only time it happens, during startup coming onto first. Everything else is smooth sailing.

1) Without taking apart the car, how would I go about verifying if it is indeed the clutch slipping, or something else?

2) If it is indeed the clutch, how will I know when it becomes absolutely necessary to replace? What will see, hear, or feel?

It seems to be less severe, or doesn’t even occur when I take super extra care going into first. Nice super slow release, with the right amount of throttle.

Put the transmission in high gear at relatively low speed, but not low enough to lug the engine. Hit the accelerator pedal. If your engine RPMs climb faster than your road speed your clutch is slipping.

If the clutch is chattering when taking off you may have some oil contamination on the clutch disc from a leaky rear main seal.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll give it a try.
